Life Event Services

Services of sacrament, celebration, blessing and commemoration

We warmly welcome enquiries about baptism and confirmation, weddings and services of blessing, funerals and memorial services, and other special services.

If you'd like to discuss any of these services, please get in touch.

Baptism and Confirmation

To be baptised here at Coventry Cathedral you need to be a worshipping member of the community (which includes Community of the Cross of Nails partners) or have strong pastoral reasons for desiring baptism here. If you qualify, we offer services where baptism is offered through either sprinkling or full immersion.

The Bishop of Coventry generally conducts confirmation services at the Cathedral twice each year – at Easter and in November. We also admit children to holy communion prior to confirmation on a regular basis. Confirmation preparation for children is normally done with a parent. The course usually lasts for about 5 weeks and explores who Jesus was, the meaning of his death and resurrection, how we enjoy a relationship with God and what baptism, holy communion and confirmation are.

Weddings and Services of Blessing

We’re delighted to welcome applications for weddings at the Cathedral, though UK law imposes certain conditions which must be met.

The qualification for being married in the Cathedral is that one or both of the couple must be resident in the Cathedral parish, or be a regular worshipper at the Cathedral and a member of our Electoral Roll. (Please note that the change in the law in 2008 which makes it easier for couples to get married in a church where they have a family or other special connection even if they don’t live in the parish does not apply to cathedrals.)

Alternatively, those who are able to demonstrate a strong personal link with the Cathedral can apply for a Special Licence from the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Faculty Office. We can advise you on this, but you need to be aware that an additional fee is payable for an Archbishop’s Licence, and it is not always granted.

If none of these options is open to you, we would be happy to explore the possibility of a Service of Blessing in the Cathedral. This normally follows a civil wedding ceremony. No particular legal requirements apply in this situation.

Please note that it is not possible for civil partnerships to be registered in the Cathedral. The law also prevents the Cathedral from being used as the venue for marriage ceremonies of same-sex couples.

We have a number of lovely chapels which are suitable for more intimate family gatherings, as well as the Nave for larger groups. We can also offer spaces for a reception, bells, music and the wonderful setting of the Ruins for your photographs.

Funerals and Memorial Services

Funerals and Services of Thanksgiving here are absolutely not limited to any particular group of people. We seek to be a space for the whole city and it is a privilege to mark the life of anyone who loves the place or feels a particular connection to the Cathedral. Our diary can be busy, so we can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to help, but if we possibly can we surely will, so do get in touch.

Other special services

Alongside our regular pattern of daily worship, the Cathedral is able to host a number of special services during the year. For example, Coventry’s Blue Coat School was recently able to celebrate its three hundredth anniversary with a service of celebration which filled the Cathedral to capacity. We also host a number of carol services each December. We are always happy to consider requests to use the Cathedral and to discuss your particular circumstances.
