Launch of the Organ Restoration Appeal with David Briggs

Thank you to everyone who came to our Gala Organ Performance with David Briggs on the 27th November for the launch of the Organ Restoration Appeal and helping to raise vital funds to support our target of £1 million to refurbish and clean the Cathedral’s magnificent organ.

If you missed it or want to hear it again, it will be broadcast on BBC radio 3 at 7:30pm on 30 November and will be available for 30 days on BBC Sounds: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0012129

The organ is a remarkable musical instrument with a special place in both our cathedral and civic life. However, there are numerous parts and technical elements and at least once in a generation every organ will need a major overhaul.

After sixty years the time has come to give our organ some serious TLC. This is a complicated task given its immense height, location and complexity, especially if you consider that every one of its 4,986 pipes needs to be removed, cleaned and often repaired and then replaced and tuned. Once complete, the organ will be in full working order and speak as vibrantly as it did 60 years ago.

The organ is integral to the choirs and music programme, and together they are at the very heart of the Cathedral and its service to all people. Restoring this grand organ is therefore a vital task.

Consequently, I very much hope that you will seriously consider supporting the Diamond Jubilee Organ Appeal and with your help, we shall fill this immense space with the sound of beautiful music.
