Coventry Cathedral’s abseil raises £50k for small and local charities!

21 local Coventry and Warwickshire charities joined forces in a fundraising challenge abseil and charity day at Coventry Cathedral. 118 abseilers fundraising for their charity came down Coventry Cathedral, the air was filled with excitement from the first 9:30am abseil until the last one at 4:30pm. Over £50,000 was raised for small and local charities, many of the charities are run by volunteers or part-time staff.

The charities that took part in the ‘Charity Day’ were Coventry Cathedral and Ruins, Clothing Coventry, Coventry and Warwickshire Mind, MS Therapy Centre, Naylors Ark, Carriers of Hope, Violet Project, UHCW Feed the Hungry, City Mission and Emmaus combined we raised over £50,000 for local charities.

Local Businesses supported the event too, and Eon played a big part in funding one of the Ropes for £2,000 and raising over £5,000 for Mind. Angels Solicitors funded 2 abseilers raising over £500 in funds for Coventry Cathedral and Ruins supporting the mammoth costs of repairs and keeping the doors open. Costco also gave a cheque to support some of the expenses Coventry Cathedral had hosting a ‘Charity Day’ event. Local independents and sole traders had stalls at the event networking and selling their goods.

Coventry Cathedral will be running this event every year to celebrate Coventry Cathedral becoming a charity, before 2023 Cathedrals had charity status, however, they could not be a charity.

Mandy Spraggett, Head of Fundraising for Coventry Cathedral said:

“There are so many small charities in Coventry and Warwickshire that need help and we wanted to share our day supporting other charities. Small charities do not have the funding budget to put on a spectacular challenge, this event cost £5,000, and each charity gave a little to support the event. The Charity Day will grow each year uniting local charities for local people in Coventry and Warwickshire in need. Coventry Cathedral raised the desperately needed amount of £9,500. The Tower in the Ruins are currently closed for repair inspections costing £12,000 for the repair report, we are holding our breath to the cost of the preservation of this monumental Coventry iconic building. We had 9 fundraisers who raised over £3,500 abseiling including the Dean of Coventry Cathedral - John Witcome and Canon Nitano Muller. If any local businesses would like to help sponsor the event or if a local charity wants to be involved next year, please let Coventry Cathedral know.”
