FOUND SOUND

13th & 14th September 12-6pm, Coventry Cathedral Crypt

The sound of

… ringing bells

… foundation stones

… steel cathedrals

This is a unique opportunity for members of the public to access the medieval crypt at Coventry Cathedral as part of the opening weekend for Coventry Heritage Open Days (Friday 13th & Saturday 14th September). Taking the form of a sound installation, this event will showcase the Cathedral’s archive and invite passers-by to enter this historic venue from unusual perspective, underneath the famous ruins. The Crypt Chapel ‘dates from about 1300 or earlier… for centuries it fell into disuse or was used merely for storage… When in 1940 the Cathedral above was destroyed, this chapel at once became the heart of Cathedral worship’ (Cathedral Guide Book, 1960).
This year, alumni artists from the University of Warwick have been working with the crypt as creative stimulus for a sound installation that takes ‘found sound’ as the starting point for an immersive piece of work open to all. Fragments of sound from the Cathedral’s archive form the basis of an specially created experience for visitors and passers-by. Director Jonathan Heron has said: ‘We are interested in the cathedral as a site of performance and learning, as much as a space for worship and reflection. Having spent a few months working with the Cathedral’s archive and the multiple narratives surrounding the venue’s history, we have created a feedback loop from sounds and fragments.’
Sound designer Kieran Lucas is a founding member of Barrel Organ and has worked with various theatre companies including the Young Vic, the RSC and Battersea Arts Centre. Kieran has recently worked with Coney at the National History Museum on Companion: Moon (2019) alongside Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon (which visited Coventry Cathedral in 2017). The installation is designed by Nomi Everall who recently collaborated with the Belgrade Theatre and Warwick Arts Centre on 2084: The Future Now at the Shop Front Theatre. With Jonathan Heron, Nomi co-directed Fail Better Productions, an independent UK theatre company based in Oxford, formerly Company-in-Residence at The CAPITAL Centre, University of Warwick. Jonathan is now Director of Warwick’s Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) where he co-founded the Emerge programme with Warwick Arts Centre.
Credits: This production is supported by the Emerge programme, a network of alumni artists from the University of Warwick working in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) and Warwick Arts Centre. Co-created by Jonathan Heron, Kieran Lucas and Nomi Everall. With special thanks to Dianne Morris.
