Sebastian Carrington, one our choral scholars, has reached the semi-final stage of the BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2020 competition. The semi-finals are due to be broadcast on Sunday 22nd and Sunday 29th November in the Sunday lunchtime Songs of Praise slot. Three girls and three boys will then go through to a final that will be broadcast on BBC 1 and Radio 2 in December.
One winner will be awarded the title ‘BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2020’ and will receive a trophy as well as performing on Songs of Praise and taking part in radio recordings. There may also be opportunities for the winner’s choir or music group to be broadcast on BBC Radio and a chance to experience a recording session with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sebastian began formal singing lessons aged seven years old, He began studying with Mr John Gull in Leicester. He quickly progressed through the ABRSM singing grades, until finally passing grade 8 with distinction; currently the youngest to do so. He became the youngest person to take an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music diploma exam at the age of eleven years old, which he passed with a Distinction.
After singing as a chorister here for many years, Sebastian is now a counter-tenor with the Choral Scholars and Clerks. He also sings in the Senior Choir and a Vocal Ensemble at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
