Every cathedral has a Fabric Advisory Committee (FAC). The FAC and the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England (CFCE) are both statutory decision-making bodies who also have a duty to advise the Cathedral Chapter.
An FAC’s work involves:
- Determining applications made to it by the Cathedral Chapter for approval of works under the Care of Cathedrals Measure.
- Giving advice to the Cathedral Chapter on the care, conservation, repair or development of the Cathedral, or on specific projects.
- Overseeing the drawing up and maintenance of the Cathedral’s inventory.
- Drawing up the list of objects on the inventory which, in the FAC’s view, should be designated as being of outstanding interest.
Half the members are appointed by the Cathedral Chapter and half are appointed by the CFCE. They are people with special knowledge of the care and maintenance of buildings of outstanding architectural or historic interest, and of the particular Cathedral to which they are appointed.
