The Cathedral Church of Saint Michael invites applications from suitably experienced people to become lay members of the Cathedral’s Finance Committee.

Coventry Cathedral’s Finance Committee, which reports to the Cathedral Chapter, provides oversight, scrutiny, challenge and support for the management of all financial matters in the Cathedral. The Cathedral has an annual turnover of over £1 million, and after a period of operating deficits is seeking to secure a sustainable financial future for the Cathedral’s mission and ministry by realising its potential from tourism, retail, events, fundraising and stewardship.

The Committee’s work includes monthly reviews of performance, scrutiny of proposals for annual budgets and projects, approval of annual accounts including interface with the Cathedral’s auditors, management of the Cathedral’s modest investment portfolio. The Committee also oversees essential partnerships, including the strategic partnership with the Coventry Diocese.

The Committee comprises the Chairman, Jonathan Evans OBE (a member of the Cathedral Chapter appointed by the Bishop of Coventry), the Dean and the Sub-Dean, plus two lay members. The Cathedral’s Finance Director, Management Accountant and Business Manager attend meetings. The Committee normally meets monthly.

The two lay members’ terms of appointment come to an end on 30th April, and applications are invited from suitably experienced people to replace them. We are looking for individuals who have held senior positions in the commercial or not-for-profit worlds, with experience of managing a business on tight margins. We are aiming for at least one of the appointees to be a qualified accountant. Experience of the tourism industry, the retail sector or events management would also be welcome; sympathy with our Christian values and support for achieving the Cathedral’s Vision (see below), are essential. The positions are unremunerated.

Our vision is of a reconciled and reconciling Cathedral which is open and welcoming to all, which serves to glorify God in our worship, and reaches out to the world in our ministry of reconciliation. Our vision is also for a sufficiently robust resource base that we are able to be creative in our activity, confident that we have sufficient financial and human resources to deliver our vision without compromise.

Could your financial experience help us?

Although some sources are saying that Knife Angel (see here) has already arrived in Coventry, we are not expecting this amazing sculpture to be with us until the week beginning March 11th. It will be here until mid-April.
