Cathedral hosts second military funeral

23rd September 2009

On Wednesday 23rd September 2009, Coventry Cathedral was the venue for
the funeral of Fusilier Shaun Bush. Fusilier Bush died at the Royal
Centre for Defence Medicine, Selly Oak, on Tuesday 25 August 2009 of
wounds he had sustained in Afghanistan. He had been taking part in a
foot patrol in Sangin district, Helmand province, on Saturday 15 August
when an explosive device detonated, killing his colleague Sergeant Simon
Valentine.

Fusilier Bush was attempting to rescue Sergeant Valentine in the
aftermath of this, when there was a second explosion and he sustained
serious injuries and was returned to Selly Oak for treatment. Sadly,
despite the best efforts of medical staff, he lost his fight for life
ten days later.

Being interviewed on BBC Midlands Today, Canon Adrian Daffern (who led
the service) paid tribute to Shaun's 'courage, bravery, and heroism',
paying tribute to Shaun's 'extraordinary selfless act in trying to
rescue his colleague'.

Two weeks ago the Cathedral hosted the funeral of Lance Corporal James
Fullarton, who, like Shaun Bush, was serving in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
