Our heartbeat
Coventry Cathedral has been a place of Christian worship for over 1,000 years. It is the principal church of the Bishop of Coventry, the main (sometimes called 'mother') church of the Diocese of Coventry, a geographical area also encompassing 239 parish churches and communities. Coventry is a Church of England cathedral.
Because of our history, and especially the events of 14 November 1940, we believe Coventry Cathedral has a special responsibility to take the message of reconciliation across the world.
We consider this ministry to be our particular calling from God - sometimes described as 'God's thumb-print' on us.
In the New Testament part of the Bible, which tells us about Jesus Christ, his first followers and the beginnings of the Christian Church, there are two letters from St Paul to the followers of Jesus in the ancient city of Corinth. The second letter was written around 55 AD. In the fifth chapter, Paul tells the Corinthians:
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.
We believe that this is still a vital message for us today: that we should be reconciled to God, and then take the message of reconciliation out to others that they might be reconciled to each other and to God as well. And how are we to be reconciled to God? Christians believe that can only happen through faith in Jesus Christ and we at Coventry Cathedral would love to help you if you are interested in exploring faith.
